Just a short reflection here, brethren.
Does the following quote from C.S. Lewis disturb you?
“Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
It disturbs me.
It disturbs me in the unique way that a well thought out critique from a good friend disturbs me. You know those moments, when a friend sees your wound, and as much as we try to tell them, “No, it’s okay, I’ll be alright,” they insist on treating it anyway. We act similarly to the hero in an action movie - we face death and danger courageously, but wince when the leading lady cleans our wounds.
