Today’s gospel is a riveting account of Jesus casting out a demon that possessed a man in Capernaum on the Sabbath. In light of such a demonstration of power, I call on you today, brothers and sisters, to meditate on the authority of Christ, authority so great that even the demons obey His command. Do we trust that authority as we should? Do we take comfort in the rock-solid fact of Christ’s sovereignty over our lives, or do we echo the sentiments of the demon that we hear today? As He draws near to us, are our hearts open to receive Him, or instead do they cry out, “What have you to do with me, Jesus of Nazareth?” Do we say that we know who He is, yet live out our days contrary to that knowledge? I know that I have failed many times and that I will probably fail many times more in trusting God. And so I pray that this day, we may come to discern our answers to these questions carefully and that by His grace, we will increasingly trust Jesus Christ and His authority over our lives.
